Asphalt Driveway Cost Planner

Turn a contractor's per-square-foot price into an itemized asphalt driveway budget. Measure up to three rectangular sections or enter a total area, choose new installation or resurfacing, and enter the low and high prices you were quoted. Add tear-out, base preparation, drainage and other line items if they apply. The planner never supplies a price for you — every dollar figure comes from your own quotes — and it lists what is excluded. Sealing an existing driveway is a separate job with its own calculator.

Gravel, blueprints and a tape measure on a construction site

How do I estimate an asphalt driveway cost?

Multiply the area by the per-square-foot price on your quote, then add separately priced items. A 50 × 12 ft driveway is 600 sq ft; at quoted prices of $4 and $6 per sq ft plus $1/sq ft tear-out and $300 drainage, the range is $3,300 to $4,500. Those example prices are for the arithmetic only — use your own local quotes.

Key takeaways

  • New installation includes base work; resurfacing overlays an existing sound base; sealing coats the surface only.
  • Compare quotes on the same area and the same line items.
  • The planner deliberately has no default prices — national averages are not local quotes.

Calculated in your browser

This calculator runs locally; your exact figures are not sent to our servers. Anonymous usage events (calculator name, field names, rounded value ranges) are recorded by Google Analytics — see the privacy policy.

How to use this calculator

  1. Pick new installation or resurfacing to match your quote.
  2. Measure each rectangular section, or enter a known total area.
  3. Enter the price per square foot from your quote (and a high price if you have a range).
  4. Add any separately priced items, then print or download the itemized list.

What each input means

InputWhat it means
SectionsBreak L-shapes and aprons into rectangles and add them.
Low / high pricePer-sq-ft prices from different quotes or a contractor's stated range.
Removal / baseOnly if quoted per square foot; otherwise put a lump sum in Other.

Formula used

Area = Σ (Length × Width) · Paving = Area × Price/sq ft

Total = Paving + Area × (Removal + Base) + Drainage + Other

Worked example

One 50 × 12 ft section = 600 sq ft. Quoted $4–$6/sq ft → paving $2,400–$3,600. Removal at $1/sq ft = $600; drainage $300. Totals: $3,300 low and $4,500 high. (Example prices only.)

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing a resurfacing quote with a full replacement quote

Different scopes; an overlay over a failing base may crack again quickly.

  • Double-counting the base

Some quotes include base prep in the per-sq-ft price. Leave the base line at 0 if so.

  • Forgetting the apron at the street

Measure it as its own section.

When the estimate may differ from reality

The final invoice can differ if the contractor finds soft subgrade, changes thickness, adds a mobilisation minimum or bills price escalation. Measured area on site may also differ from your tape measurements.

Assumptions and limitations

What this calculator assumes

  • Rectangular sections measured in feet.
  • Per-area prices apply uniformly to the whole area.

What it does not account for

  • Does not estimate asphalt tonnage, thickness or subgrade conditions.
  • No price data is built in.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't it show an average price?
Prices vary by region, season, access and base condition. A built-in average would look like a quote without being one, so the planner uses only your numbers.
Where does sealing fit?
Sealing is a maintenance coat on existing asphalt. Use the Driveway Sealing Calculator for product quantity and cost.
