Flooring hub: square footage, waste and boxes

Ordering flooring means measuring each room's square footage, adding a waste allowance for cuts (about 5–15% depending on layout), and rounding up to full boxes. This hub collects the calculator and guides that walk through irregular rooms, closets and patterns.

Quick checklist

  1. Divide an irregular floor plan into rectangles; total floor area (sq ft) = sum of length (ft) × width (ft) for every section being covered.
  2. Required area (sq ft) = total floor area × (1 + the product/layout waste percentage ÷ 100). Check the flooring maker's guidance; the cited SMARTCORE planner uses 10% for its product.
  3. Cartons to buy = round up (required area ÷ sq ft covered per carton on your product label). Do not round each room separately if cartons can be shared.

In-depth guides

  • How Much Flooring Do I Need?

Measure the room's area, add a waste percentage based on layout (5-20%), then divide by the box's coverage and round up. A 150 sq ft room with 10% waste needing 165 sq ft, at 22 sq ft per box, requires 8 boxes.
