How to use this calculator
Paver quantity is area-based (packs), while the base underneath is volume-based (cubic yards). This tool computes packs from the label coverage and, only if you enter a base depth, shows the base volume separately — the two are never merged into one figure.
Enter your own figures in the form above. A blank field is treated as missing — not as zero — so the tool will ask you to complete it. A genuine zero is accepted where it makes sense (for example, no HOA dues). Press Calculate for a breakdown, Load worked example to fill in the example below, or Reset to return to the defaults.
Formula and assumptions
Required area = area × (1 + waste %). Packs = required ÷ pack coverage, rounded UP. Purchased coverage = packs × coverage. Cost = packs × pack price. Base volume (if depth entered) = area × (depth ÷ 12) ft³, ÷ 27 for yards.
Worked example
Worked example: 100 ft², 5% waste, 10 ft² per pack. Required 105 ft²; 11 packs; purchased coverage 110 ft². Base volume is shown only when a base depth is entered; no base depth is invented here.
Use the Load worked example button above to reproduce this example in the form, then change one input at a time to see what drives the result.
Limitations and common mistakes
No base depth, bedding thickness or drainage design is assumed. Pattern waste varies with paver shape and layout — herringbone and circular patterns need more than straight runs. Edge restraints, joint sand and compaction are separate materials.
Frequently asked questions
Why separate base volume?
Because base aggregate and pavers are different products with different units and suppliers. Merging them hides both quantities.
How much waste for pavers?
Often around 5% for straight layouts, more for patterns and curves. Set the figure for your actual layout.
Should I keep spares?
Yes — a pack of spares covers future repairs with a matching dye lot.

No external price, product or market data is used on this page. Every price, density, coverage and rate is a figure you enter, or a clearly labelled illustrative default in the form. Check product labels and supplier quotes for the figures that apply to your job.
